Will You Follow Your Dreams?

Do you ever sit back and wonder why you are doing what you are doing? Why you are studying what you are studying? If what you are doing right now will bring you where you want to be?

The way our life is organized can lead us in a certain direction without really consciously deciding to go there. Expectations and habits can influence the choices we make in life. Without being aware of the road that brought us here we might find ourself in an unwanted position. Maybe according to what others expect from us, but not according to what makes us feel happy or confident.
We all know the story of the butterfly effect, how small butterfly wings in Central Park might cause a hurricane on the other side of the world. Very small events in your life may eventually cause great changes.
The moment you’ve been told at primary school that you’re not working hard enough to reach the level needed for a particular form of education your dream of becoming a doctor might fall into pieces and your goals in life might permanently change. Maybe your teacher was just saying this to make you aware of your responsibilities for your own development, to give you a bit of extra motivation to work a bit harder. But you perceive it as a judgement, not as a form of stimulation.
These small words resulting in major changes are not bad though. They determine which way you go, and all the things you do will create your own unique form of education. When you’re young it’s very obvious you take the words of your teacher for granted. But now you’ve chosen your own direction, are you aware of the road that brought you here? What questions did you ask yourself when you chose to start studying physics, or medicine, or film making? Did you already find an answer to those questions? Do you still feel the need to find the answer?
Once you took a certain road it’s often difficult to go back. You’ve already invested time and money in it, you’ve created expectations by going this direction, you made friends, it feels safe.
But sometimes it can be good to think for a while about what you really would love to do, where you would love to be and how you picture yourself living in five years. Is what you are doing now bringing you there? Just take some time and think about it.

Good food for thought.
I think what may be important here, as well, is that before change can be effected by an individual, he or she may first need to realize that in many cases we DO have the power to make a change.
There is often an unconscious, pre-existing belief that we “have to” do this or that, stay here or there. We don’t even consider looking for options because on a deeper level we’ve decided it would be a waste of time. We’ve already assumed that we’re powerless, when in fact that may not be true at all.
